USB 3.0-equipped PCs due before end of the year

Following the delivery of final specifications and first host controller samples, it appears that the SuperSpeed Universal Serial Bus standard, better known as USB 3.0, is about ready for a commercial rollout. According to a Nikkei report, Taiwanese PC vendors will be among the first to release computers equipped with the next-gen interface, which promises up to 5Gbps transfer speeds, or roughly ten times the speed of USB 2.0.

Citing rapid development in integrated circuits and the shipment of compliant controllers to PC manufacturers, the website claims the first USB 3.0-compatible PCs could appear by the end of the year, with 2010 seeing the start of a mass rollout. External storage is the likely first application of this technology. Unfortunately, USB 3.0 devices are not expected to reach its full potential at launch, with speeds probably reaching only 1.2Gbps initially. This is expected to improve as the standard matures though, as it was the case with its predecessor, paving the way for stuff like HD video streaming or backing up gigabytes of data in mere seconds.

Foxconn, Pegatron get PS3 Slim manufacturing contracts?

For the past few months we’ve been hearing rumors about a slimmer, and potentially cheaper, version of the PlayStation 3. Alleged images of the console started making the rounds back in May, followed by a cease and desist letter, which ironically gave rumors a bit more credence. Things quieted down for a while, with no mention of the console at E3, but speculation is once again running rampant.

Somewhat coinciding with a report from Ars Technica last week, the Economic Daily News claims Sony indeed finalized a new PS3 form factor and has already awarded Foxconn and Pegatron with manufacturing contracts. They also assert the units are slated to be delivered this month, although that seems less plausible since it would give Sony and retailers no time to clear out both the 80GB and 160GB models – Ars’ fall release prediction is more likely due to this reasoning.

Of course, Sony could also align the pricing on current models to sell the slimmed-down version concurrently. Whatever the case may be, for now you should take this for what it is – a rumor.

Apple preparing iPhone OS 3.1 update

While for the most part the release of iPhone OS 3.0 has gone over successfully, there have been problems reported here and there. Without mentioning specific fixes, Apple has been preparing the 3.1 update for customer devices to address certain issues. A beta has already been released for developer perusal, with a public release hopefully available soon.

For those that have access to the beta, there are several tweaks worth noting – improved voice control, enhancements to the user interface, paste capabilities in the dialer application and more. There are also changes to MMS functionality, even though the majority of iPhone customers in the U.S. currently do not have access to such feature.

That might change soon, however, with AT&T expected to enable MMS access when 3.1 debuts. One issue that remains unclear, besides a specific launch date, is whether or not Apple will be fixing the 3G S overheating issues or any of the reported battery life issues across numerous models.

Dell LCD Monitors 19-inch

Taiwan consumer regulators have ordered Dell to honor a pricing slip-up on their website that offered 19-inch LCD monitors for only NT$500 (around $15). The pricing mistake was posted late Thursday, and while it has been fixed since, news of the supposed bargain spread quickly via email, blogs and sites like Twitter. In the eight hours before Dell corrected the listing to the intended price of NT$4,800 ($148), 26,000 people had placed orders for nearly 140,000 displays.

Dell apologized and promised to offer “reasonable discounts” to those who ordered the incorrectly-priced monitors. Naturally, people were not happy. Taiwan’s Consumer Protection Commission said it has received 471 complaints about the mix-up and ordered Dell to complete orders for customers who had only ordered one monitor. Those who had ordered more than one should receive discounts on the second and further units.

According to the agency’s statement, if Dell doesn’t follow the directive, they will consider it a violation of Taiwan’s fair trade laws and seek legal recourse.

ATI Radeon HD 4890 vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 275

Gamers looking to spend some $250 on a brand new graphics card were given two new options last month when ATI unleashed their Radeon HD 4890 and Nvidia countered with the GeForce GTX 275.

Starting with the Radeon HD 4890, this new card is in essence an overclocked Radeon HD 4870 with far greater overclocking abilities. ATI has fine-tuned the RV790 XT core allowing for incredible core frequencies. Although the default core speed of 850MHz is a moderate bump over the 4870, many users are reporting overclocks in the order of 1GHz and beyond, which makes for an interesting update.

The GeForce GTX 275 is also a derivative from an existing product, borrowing its GPU from the GeForce GTX 295, which is a dual-GPU graphics card. The GTX 275 uses a 55nm GPU featuring the same amount of SPUs and TAUs as the more powerful GeForce GTX 285, while only as many ROPs as the GeForce GTX 260. Nvidia has then increased the core and memory frequencies of the GeForce GTX 275 when compared to the dual-GPU GeForce GTX 295.

On paper the GeForce GTX 275 is a lot like the GeForce GTX 285, a graphics card that costs an additional $100. The key difference between these two products, other than the slightly different core configurations, is their memory bus width. The more expensive GeForce GTX 285 gets the 512-bit bus, whereas the GeForce GTX 275 features a 448-bit bus, or about 20% less bandwidth at its disposal.

As luck would have it, the GeForce GTX 275 was not just a quick and easy counter for the Radeon HD 4890, it was the perfect counter. Prior to the launch of these two cards the Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 260 were already doing battle. The Radeon HD 4890 was meant to outclass both products and conquer the $250 price range but evidently that didn't go as planned.

Kingston announced a new product in their HyperX series today, a 12GB triple-channel DDR3 1600MHz RAM kit. Consisting of three 4GB modules, the company is proudly the first to release a kit of its specifications. Naturally, the kit is mostly targeting the hardcore users seeking to max out their x58-based machines.

Senior technology manager at the company, Mark Tekunoff, was boastful of Kingston having been the first to release 2GHz kits, and expressed his enthusiasm about the recently introduced memory. He went on to say that this particular set of RAM was tested on the Asus P6T Deluxe motherboard and was capable of reaching 1,600MHz at 1.65V with respectable 9-9-9-27 timings. The latest HyperX offering has the largest capacity in the series.

For most, having 12 or 24GB of DDR3 1600MHz RAM is a sheer novelty – and one that won’t come cheap with this memory. Kingston’s 12GB HyperX kit will launch in the US with an MSRP of $1,400; or about the cost of our “Mid-range Enthusiast's PC.” Although some will buy it regardless, I hope at least a fraction of the purchasers will truly put the RAM to use.

Intel's Core i7 is one of the most innovative CPU releases to date. It's fast, efficient, and cutting edge. The thing about cutting edge though, is that you'll often pay a premium to gain access.What about if you're a laptop user? Usually, you'll have to wait several months for either AMD or Intel to release a mobile version of its new processors. These mobile CPUs have smaller packages as well as lower power usage. So what options do you have if you want the latest CPU in a laptop? You have to compromise on several fronts:

• Price: prepare to pay a premium for laptops that are able to take desktop processors.
• Battery: these hybrid desktop-replacements are power hungry. Mobile computing is not one of their strong points.
• Size: because of the space and cooling requirements, these laptops are often very thick, close to a 1U chassis when closed.
• Weight: they're back breakers.

What differentiates the AVADirect Core i7 notebook from, say a seemingly identical system like the one from Eurocom?

AVADirect: Both AVADirect and Eurocom utilize the same hardware from the same OEM. This OEM is Clevo, based in Taiwan which is not widely known to the general public. However, its systems are used by various resellers and Integrators such as previously mentioned Eurocom, Alienware, Pro-Star and Sager.

What differentiates AVADirect from these other companies is our distinctly wide array of customization options. No other VAR offers the level of selection in our configurations, thus this is our main advantage over the competition, freedom of choice. That being said, if the selection seems a bit overwhelming, our knowledgeable sales staff is always eager to build you a perfect system amidst plethora of options.

The benefits of using a desktop CPU are clear, you get the latest technology early, without waiting for a mobile CPU version to be released. But you trade this for heat, power usage and size. How does the AVADirect system combat this?

AVADirect: Unlike your normal notebook cooling, which combines the heat of the processor, chipset, and other chips together via heat pipes, each of the major components are cooled by their own respective heat sink and fan. If I was a gamer, with a $2600 budget, how would you convince me to go with the AVADirect Core i7 laptop, versus a small desktop that would otherwise be able to pack more hardware and be more expandable?

AVADirect: We do not convince or push our customers into a solution that is not right for them. We listen to their needs and wants and offer recommendations to what might be the perfect system for them. We do not push features and options that the customer does not want. Every customer is unique and so is the system we build for them.

However, to answer the question, if you were an Enthusiast Gamer who was always on the move or constantly going to LAN parties, then this system would be a great fit. For gamers with all budgets, we have many great gaming notebooks and desktops that can match and exceed their ever growing needs for quality, speed and bragging rights.

Now, we're still reserved of laptops in this category. Laptops that utilize the latest desktop CPUs command a big premium, as you read above. If you're going to frequent gaming events, our opinion is a SFF box, that will be able to pack more upgrades. The main advantage here is that the screen is integrated, so you don't have to lug around a separate LCD.

Of course, you also get a powerful desktop CPU. If you have to have the best of the best, and don't mind to pay the premium then these types of desktop-replacement solutions are worth looking into. But always consider your options and longevity.

SATA Spec 3.0 6 Gb/sec. Speeds

The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) today made official the Serial ATA Revision 3.0 specification. The new interface now offers up to six gigabits per second (Gb/sec.) via a high-speed serial data link between storage units, disk drives, optical and tape drives, and more. The new 3.0 spec also offers enhancements to support multimedia applications, enhancements for increased functionality, and is even backwards compatible with earlier SATA implementations 1.5 and 3 Gb/sec.

“As speed becomes critical to today’s storage, the SATA Revision 3.0 specification doubles the maximum transfer speed enabled by technology, paving the way for a new generation of faster SATA products,” said Knut Grimsrud, SATA-IO president and Intel Fellow and director of storage architecture. “SATA-IO members will be able to design for their customers products with the speed they crave, without compromising the quality and performance they’ve come to expect from SATA technology.”

In addition to maintaining low cost and low power consumption via improved power management capabilities, the SATA-IO also provided a few general highlights with today's announcement. A new Native Command Queuing (NCQ) streaming command will be available in 3.0, enabling isochronous data transfers, specifically for audio and video applications that consume large chunks of bandwidth. 3.0 also provide a new connector designed to accommodate 7mm optical disk drives suited for thinner and lighter notebooks. A small, Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector will also be available for more compact 1.8-inch storage devices.

SATA-IO said that network administrators and computer equipment manufacturers will see an immediate benefit after moving from SATA 3 Gb/sec. to SATA 6 Gb/sec., with data transfers now taking half the amount of time; hard drive caching will experience faster transfers of short bursts of data. The SATA 6 Gb/sec. connection also minimizes the throughput bottleneck suffered by today's faster solid state drives; future SSDs will require 6Gb/sec. connectivity. With the reduced latency of SATA 6 Gb/sec., RAID performance will dramatically improve, workstation applications will perform better, and storage area network drives will experience an increase in data streams, boosting storage network density and efficiency.

The SATA-IO also added that the same cables and connectors used for current SATA environments could be used to connect SATA 6 Gb/sec. devices. However, cables already maxed out using the current 3 Gb/sec. operating margins will not perform quite as well using the new SATA 6 Gb/sec. because of an increased number of resends. The SATA-IO basically recommends that end-users utilize "quality components to ensure data integrity and robust operation" at the faster rate. Put simply, buy new cables.

"The SATA interface has developed into the de facto standard HDD interface in computing applications," said John Rydning, research director for hard disk drives at analyst firm IDC. "The new SATA Revision 3.0 specification builds upon the current market success of SATA, and will help to solidify SATA as the predominant storage device interface technology for the foreseeable future."

ECS A790GXM-AD3 (Socket AM3) DDR3 motherboard

AMD have certainly had to fight off an amount of heat they got ever since they introduced their Phenom processor. Plagued by a bug which they fixed moderately fast, their reputation got a pretty big dent. Last year, after April, things started to look much better. The new B3 revision processors where pretty okay. Then in January 2009 they released their Phenom II processor. Processors with tremendous good value for money, being able to compete with Intel's Core 2 Quad lineup of processors. And surely, while Intel has the upper hand in the high-end segment, AMD remains king of performance for money, as especially the Black Edition Phenom II processors offer good value and can be overclocked pretty darn well. Something the Guru3D readers like and enjoy doing very much.

With a successful launch of Phenom II processors, AMD has now started to further improve their chip design and overall performance. Squeeze more performance out of them, reach higher clock-frequencies, yeah the truth is, it isn't looking so bad anymore, no sir. I think roughly half of the PCs in my office alone are Phenom II based computers. I like the price, and I certainly like the performance very much, plus they are very energy efficient with the AMD 790 chipset.

So, while in early January AMD released Phenom II processors, in early February the first Phenom II update was already released. AMD Phenom II processors with a new socket design, Socket AM3, which opens up DDR3 memory support. The good thing, Socket AM2+ (DDR2) motherboards can run these AM3 processors fine (mandatory BIOS update required though). But fact is... that is a stackload of compatibility for sure as you can use a DDR2 memory platform with AM3 processors.

When we reviewed the 1st batch of AM3 processors, we did so on Socket AM2+ to prove how sound that chipset really is. We also promised to review a Phenom II AM3 processor on the new DDR3 (AM3) platform. And that's what we'll be doing today. We will review the A790GXM-AD3 motherboard from the folks at ECS Elitegroup. This article will entail two primary focuses. The first being a review on this motherboard, the second... to observe if we actually see a performance increase from DDR2 over DDR3 memory.

Today we'll actually show you some very interesting examples of that, yet obviously we will go a little deeper into the architecture and fire of a dozen or two games at the product as well. And yes, we finally found a product that can play Crysis at a decent resolution with high-image quality settings.

Before we dive into the review; architecture and features of the new GeForce GTX series 200. I really wanted to take you on a Shader crash course. We, the press, talk about it all the time in our articles, but certainly it is very difficult for the end-user to even understand what a shader or shader processor is. This, my friends, is a little thing called the Xonar D2X. ASUS released the PCI-based Xonar D2 quite some time ago, and not so long ago, they released the D2X, the PCI-express version. After a long conversation with Asus, we finally get to review this one, the D2X. Two things nice about coming late to the party is that you know what everybody’s wearing, and everybody notices your arrival.

And my God is this thing a showboat.

The gold and PCIe is nice. The Burr-Brown 24 bit/192 KHz DAC's are super high-end and just about the best you can get. The Dolby and DTS encoding is hot. But LED lights? EMI shield? Requires a power connection? Well, I think the D2X would compete well in a beauty pageant, but honestly, it's just so over the top. Creative have pretty much ruled the roost with their Soundblaster series, and with very little surprise with an exceptional performance lead with their DirectSound acceleration, and a healthy game support in Windows XP for their proprietary EAX extensions.

One thing that has opened up with Microsoft’s latest OS, Vista, is the sound card market. Vista ended the direct hardware access era, effectively destroying Creative’s performance lead. Users of XP still have some advantage, but as soon as XP is dead, we’ll have a level playing field and renewed competition in the market. That’s the theory anyway, and it does seem to be starting right about now.
